![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This isn't terribly different from presenting RBI totals for baseball players from before 1920 (the first season the statistic was "official"). Given that accounting for these 'unofficial' statistics allows us to paint a richer picture of the history of the game, we think it is a no-brainer to present them on Pro Football Reference, allowing fans to gain a deeper appreciation of some of football's biggest stars in the 1960s and 1970s. In the case of sacks, thanks to decades of research by John Turney and Nick Webster, we have a very thorough accounting of the statistic all the way back to 1960. However, thanks to Official Gamebooks, 'unofficial' tackle totals get published in many places (including here). Heck, we don't even "officially" know how many tackles anyone had in 2020 (or any other season). After all, we don't know how many rushing yards Jim Thorpe had, passing yards Paddy Driscoll had or even how many blocked shots Wilt Chamberlain had. In many cases we accept these holes in the official record and move on. Hoping to expand this back further in the offseason, but hey, 45 years isn't too bad to start.Īgain, thanks to all of you for using the site and feel free to contact us either here, at on Twitter, or via if you ever have any issues, concerns, or ideas. The NFL has only officially counted player sacks since 1982, which means sack records and leaderboards present an incomplete history of pass rushing. As a parting gift, here's something that's out on the site now but hasn't really been promoted yet - we (with a bunch of help) tracked down the thrower of every pick six since 1970 and now have QB pick six logs for all quarterbacks since then as well as leaderboards for seasons and careers. I will likely check in later and answer some more stuff but for now I've gotta sign off. ![]() Stop by and say hi!ĮDIT: Hey all - I actually need to get out of here for the afternoon, but thanks a ton to everyone for asking and if I didn't get to your question I definitely apologize. Since the week before the Super Bowl is traditionally a little slow and I really enjoyed the last time I stopped by here, I wanted to come in again for an AMA! Feel free to ask me questions about the site, the Play Index, football, programming, or anything else! Also, for those of you who use the site a lot, I'd love to hear what ideas or features you want to see added.Īlso, I should mention that we've just opened r/SportsReference, a dedicated Sub for all the Sports-Reference sites. This is Mike, the person who runs Pro Football Reference. ![]()
